Hope Gives Life...

January 5, 6 and 7, 2011

A Creole Proverb...

"Espwa fè viv."

"Hope makes you live, or hope gives life."

A Mother's Heartache...

This is Madamn Altilus Lerantus.  She and her family live in the tent city called "Camp Hope." She came to me this morning to explain a story to me...

Haitian lady

She and her six children live in Camp Hope in a tent.  Her leg was crushed during the earthquake, but she is slowly recovering...

Her 16 year old daughter, Manousheca, had a fight with her boyfriend, Abel. Manousheca burned down the tent of her boyfriend, nearly causing a fire to spread to the other tents.  Everything was burned, including all of Abel's clothes, shoes and all of his possessions.

Tents

When the camp people found out about this, they threatened her life and made her leave...

Her mother came to me today, on crutches, begging us to please be sure to give her a new house in Miracle Village.

She attends the Love A Child Church (red and white tent church) in Camp Hope and is a devout Christian.

Crowd waiting for shoes

She sent her daughter back to her father, and promised us that she would not let her live in Miracle Village.  (The people, of Miracle Village and Camp Hope, don't like her.)

With tears in her eyes, I told her that we would give her family a "chance" in Miracle Village, but that her daughter could not live there.  She has already made too many enemies.  As she thanked me and left on her crutches, I saw her raise her hands and thank God..."espwa fè viv." "Hope makes us live."

Back in the Camp, another precious lady received "hope" today.  Her name is Madamn Nicole...

I have known Madamn Nicole for about eight years.  I first met her during a mobile clinic in Fond Parisien.  I came to love this lady who had such a big smile, but such a very sad story.  She had eight children and developed a "fever" after her last child was born.

Wait...before we tell you any more about Madamn Nicole and the "hope" she received, let me share a story from an unfortunate man who also received a great deal of "hope" with a special gift from P.E.T. - Personal Energy Transportation.

Man on PET

The man above is Doceluis Prophete and he is 32 years old. He was raised in a family that farmed for a living, and when not in school, he spent most of his time in the garden.  Over the past four years, he has lost the use of his legs.  Since he was unable to walk, he stopped going to the garden and became house bound.  He has not been able to get around for a very long time.

Now, because of a blessing from P.E.T. - Personal Energy Transportation, he received a very nice cart that allows him a little bit of independence.  He is a large man so the chair had to be revamped, but he is thrilled to be out and about again.  He doesn't want to get off the scooter, he is on it from morning until the sun goes down.  We are thankful that this little scooter can give this man a little hope.

Now, back to the story of Madann Nicole...

Warning: Graphic details coming...

The first time we met Madamn Nicole was in Fond Parisien at her mud hut.  We bought her a wheel chair and built a nice little block house for her and her children.  A few months later, we had a mobile clinic at Fond Parisien and there was Madamn Nicole, sitting in her wheelchair.  She complained of "sores on her bottom." (Apparently, no one had been there to help her bathe, and she developed terrible sores.)  As one of our volunteer nurses picked her up and washed her, large worms started coming out of her bottom.  One nurse began to sob and cry.  She had heard us tell stories of children with large worms coming out of their bottoms, but she had never seen anything like this in her life!  That nurse will never be the same.

Now, Madamn Nicole is in Camp Hope because her home was destroyed by the earthquake.  It was good to see her smiling face today.

After the fever, she became weak and could not walk... She became completely paralyzed from the waist down.  However she managed to raise all of her children by herself and keep a good attitude in life and love God.  Her dream in life was to get a "motor scooter" so she could go to church!

Her dream came true when we received some tricycle carts for those who cannot walk.  These little carts/scooters are called PETs.  They were sent to us here in Haiti in pieces so we had some of our workers "put them together."

Putting together PETs

These little vehicles are a great blessing and will help those unable to get around on foot.

PETs

Off we went to Camp Hope to find Madam Nicole to give her a "P.E.T. Cart."

Patrick on PET

Patrick, a camp leader, decided to "show her how to drive it."

When we arrived, Madamn Nicole was only wearing a shirt and underwear, so the camp leader told her to "put some clothes on because she was going to drive her cart!" Ha!   She searches for her "church outfit."

The camp leader helps to put her on her P.E.T. cart.

Getting on the PET

Patrick gives her instructions...  "Here is the handle and all you have to do is sit and peddle your hands."   "Watch where you drive!"

"You turn by using the handle, like this!"    "No, you are going backwards!"

Madamn Nicole on PET

"There she goes!"

Madamn Nicole

I watch with glee as this precious poor woman gets the "gift of her life!"

Madamn Nicole with PET

Madamn Nicole takes off and we follow!  There were many village people watching, following her every move and cheering her on!"

Well, there she goes!!!!

Riding PET

Bobby and I give her a hug and tell her that "God has answered her prayers," thanks to this wonderful organization!

Bobby and Sherry with Madamn Nicole

Espwa fè viv!  "Hope gives life!  "Thank you, P.E.T. - Personal Energy Transportation Group, a Christian organization, out of Florida!" "Praise the Lord and thank you Jesus!"

We will be sharing more stories from time to time on these wonderful inventions.  Thank you so much for making a difference in the lives of these people!

God bless you,

Bobby and Sherry
