It may make you feel uncomfortable to even think about the daily struggle of these children, who live just a short boat ride from the U.S. There is NEVER enough food; three meals a day is unheard of among the poor. The fortunate eat once a day, and that may be only a handful of rice. Home is a shed, mud hut or cardboard box.
Life is a constant struggle
There is no opportunity to go to school; education in Haiti is not free. Who can afford a uniform, books, fees and school supplies when your family is sick and hungry? Instead, days are filled working in the fields or tending to younger siblings while mother searches for food or water. Children as young as six may have to tend to babies and toddlers.
