Helping Haiti’s Children – Child Sponsorship

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.

— Isaiah 49:15

For children in Haiti, life is tough. Many live in horrific poverty. A rural family in Haiti has no opportunity to find work; making it difficult to feed their children. A single parent, most often the mother, usually cares for the children and has no means of work to feed, educate and clothe her children.

Poor, rural family in Haiti.

There is such sadness to the poverty in Haiti. In a country where over two-thirds of the people who can work, do not have jobs. Haiti’s illiteracy rate is 30 percent higher than the illiteracy rate for all Latin American and Caribbean developing countries.

Sponsor a child to help lift them out of poverty.

Fifty percent of the children do not attend school. There are 5.5 million children in Haiti between the ages of 0-24. They make up over half of the entire population of this country.

What happens to all these children? So many of these precious children end up in orphanages, even though many still have a living parent. Some children end up as a Restavec (child slave). The family will often sell a child into slavery so the others can eat.

Many children end up in the slave trade.

One in five children are undernourished, and one in ten are severely malnourished. These poor families have little resources and fewer options to take care of their children. It is up to all of us to save the children through our Child Sponsorship program.

Save the Children: One in ten Haitian children are severely malnourished.

Many families will turn to orphanages in their area. We can’t imagine why a parent would give up their child. In many cases, rural Haitians tend to have many children, as they know some will not survive beyond the age of five.

Many families will turn to children's charities to take their child.

Most recently we had a baby left in the weeds at our Love A Child gate. The family knew we would take care of the child. We didn’t realize how sick he was for a day or two. He needed immediate medical attention, which the poor family could not afford.

Love A Child’s Child Sponsorship Program

“Depi yon moun grangou, li soud.”

As soon as a person is hungry, he is deaf. Hunger has no ears.

— Haitian proverb

Imagine that you are living in a very poor village in Haiti, and you and your children haven’t eaten in several days. Constant hunger pains are what it is like for more than half the families living in Haiti.

Child Sponsorship is the best way to reach out to help the children of Haiti, and they desperately need your support. Sponsoring a child in Haiti means everything for a child’s future. It opens a new world to the impoverished children of Haiti—they are Haiti’s future!

There is nothing in the world as precious as the “smile of a child.” Love A Child feeds and educates over 8,000 poor Haitian children daily throughout our Christian schools in Haiti. This is all happening through our Child Sponsorship program. We have our own large “Children’s Home” and we support many other orphanages with our food distribution each month.

By sponsoring a child, he or she can now attend a Christian school. Sponsorship covers school uniforms and proper shoes, which every child must wear to attend school here. Having a clean and tidy school uniform is very important to the Haitian mothers.

Child sponsorship offers an education to many poor children in Haiti.

Books and school supplies are paid through sponsorship, and every child is fed a hot, nutritious meal each day. All sponsored children will also receive regular medical check-ups and basic health care.

This little girl is just one of the many Haitian children who are growing up in a world of “darkness” never being able to read or write. Her job is “helping her mother make mud cookies to sell” to other Haitian children who are hungry, just as she is. It is a never-ending job for those who live in Sapaterre. Now the children in the community need to “get out of the mud” and into a school where they can eat a hot meal each day and know that Jesus loves them! Pray about sponsoring a child and “changing their life and your life too, forever!”

Child Sponsorship has saved thousands of lives among the Haitian children. By sponsoring one of these children, you will know that you are making a difference in the life of a child by starting with a good Christian education and healthy food.

Another Success Story

We found Dieuferly d’Or in the mountain village of Covant. He was born with bilateral clubfoot and was severely malnourished with red hair. His mother, Rosena Pierre was too poor to feed him or get him any medical care. He was unable to walk and rejected in his village because of his deformity. We brought him to our Love A Child Children’s Home almost 20 years ago. With the help of our partners and sponsors, we were able to get him the surgery on his feet that he so badly needed. These operations were a very long and painful process for this little boy, but he endured.

He was born with bilateral clubfoot and was severely malnourished.

Now, this young man has grown up with the love of Christ, lots of nutritious food, and the love of his family at Love A Child. He worked hard in school, and he is now studying videography. He is also giving back to the people of Haiti. He often travels to other villages and talks to children about his life and how sponsorship changed his life. We will see what God has planned for this amazing young man!

Through Child Sponsorship, this young man has grown up with the love of Christ.

Child Sponsorship is one of the most extraordinary acts you can do for an impoverished child here in Haiti. For just $24 a month, you can provide food, a Christian education, health care, and most of all, love. Child Sponsorship will change their lives and yours too. Pray about sponsoring a child. These children will someday change lives, and maybe even the world. You may give securely online, or if you would like to speak directly to one of our staff members, you may contact our Love A Child Office at 239-210-6107, or you can also email us at info@lachaiti.org and change a child’s life, forever!
