The Children are Haiti’s Hope for a Better Future

“For wisdom is a defense, and money is a defense: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.”

Ecclesiastes 7:12

We have always said, “The precious children of Haiti are this country’s future.” Through the centuries, Haiti has had a shaky history, and even today we see the continuing unrest within the country. But there is hope!

The precious children of Haiti are this country's future.

A recent study by the World Food Program describes Haiti, “As the only low-income country in the Americas that continues to face significant humanitarian, political and development challenges. Haiti has one of the highest levels of food insecurity in the world; more than half of its total population is chronically undernourished. Poverty is profound and multi-dimensional, underlying drivers include frequent natural disasters and political crises. Haiti ranks 163 out of 188 countries on the 2016 Human Development Index.”

Most Haitians hope their country’s leaders will create a better future for their children, but it is a struggle. One of the best ways to help the children of Haiti is through education, but Haiti’s public school system is out of reach for many poor Haitians living in rural areas.

Child Sponsorship

All of our Love A Child schools bring hope to the children through a strong Christian education, a hot meal each day and routine medical care. The way we accomplish this is through our Child Sponsorship Program. Love A Child and its partners are educating over 8,500 children throughout our schools. Yet, there are still thousands of families who are unable to afford to send their children to school.

This wonderful young girl is Rosemitha, and she desperately wanted to go to school. She has five siblings, and her mother knows that without an education, there will be no future for her children. This is why Child Sponsorship is so important for the future of Haiti’s children.

Today, Rosemitha attends school in her village and is so grateful to her sponsors, who made it possible. She is doing well in school and is learning how to read and write, she’s so excited!

There are hundreds of thousands of Haitian children that never have enough food to eat, especially now, as Haiti is in a severe food crisis. Through our Child Sponsorship Program, we feed over 8,500 children in all of our Love A Child schools.

These little Haitian children are so thankful for their food, as they say prayers before their meals. They receive a hot meal each day at school, because of Child Sponsorship. They are learning Christian principles, Bible verses and songs, in addition to their academic studies. That is the recipe for a better future for the children here in Haiti — education and food.

Haitian children do not receive routine healthcare, and many have worms, impetigo and a multitude of other conditions that are symptoms of malnutrition. Malnutrition affects the physical and mental growth of these poor children. It is so sad. When we find these children, we often think they are much younger than they actually are.

This is Jasson (aka Jackson). He was seven-years-old, (we thought he was only four-years-old) when we found him while conducting a Mobile Medical Clinic high in the mountains of Savaan Pit. He was in terrible condition and suffering from severe malnutrition. He has been receiving nutritious food and given lots of love at our children’s home, but his health has been in decline. He has been diagnosed with a condition called Childhood Nephrotic Syndrome, which is not a disease, but a group of symptoms that make up a “syndrome” or condition. This little guy is uncomfortable, has a lot of pain and is not responding well to the medications that can be offered in Haiti. We were told by a visiting Pediatric Specialist that his prognosis is poor and he will probably die in his early 20s, if he does not receive the help he needs.

Love A Child takes health care and hot meals, along with a Christian education to the children through our Love A Child schools. Sponsorship is so important as most children live in remote areas where there are no medical services. The people of Haiti have struggled with poor health for many generations, with many dying at a young age.

These two little boys are brothers who lived in the Truttier garbage dump among the garbage, flies, and pigs. The garbage dump was also the “bathroom,” so you can imagine the filth. They had never been to school and never had a good, hot meal. But they always dreamed of going to school…

This is what Child Sponsorship can do! Watch our special video from the Truttier garbage dump! These two boys and their families were lifted out of the garbage dump, and into two beautiful new homes in Miracle Village. Now these two boys are attending the Love A Child Miracle Village School, a dream they thought they would never achieve, and they are receiving high grades too!

Rebuilding Love A Child Schools

“Getting ready for school.” It’s a lot more difficult getting ready for schools to open in Haiti than in the US. Private missionary schools do not receive funds from the government for broken toilets, blackboards, food, books, and things like school desks. Right now, our carpenters are busy making 250 school desks, each one seating six children! That’s just the beginning! There are far more desks and blackboards to build because we have expanded most of our schools, and more children are waiting to be sponsored to “come to school.” These building projects in Haiti also employ local laborers and create jobs!

In the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, many of our Love A Child schools were severely damaged. We are now rebuilding or renovating those schools, one-by-one, by faith alone. Right now we are working in Savaan Pit, building the new school next to the remains of the old school. This school was severely damaged during the 2010 earthquake and then destroyed during the hurricane.

We are now rebuilding or renovating those schools, one-by-one, by faith alone.

Our Miracle Village School was “bursting at the seams,” so we expanded the school, as we now have over 600 more students that were sponsored by you, our partners and sponsors. Thank you Joyce Meyer MinistriesHand of Hope for sponsoring this project for the children. We still have hundreds of children in our area of Haiti who need sponsorship.

Child Sponsorship is one of the greatest things you can do for a poor child here in Haiti. For just $24 a month you can provide nutritious food, a Christian education, health care, and most of all, love. Child Sponsorship will change your life, as well as their life. Thank you, for “each child you sponsor!” You are saving these children’s future and giving them a chance to live their dreams and become productive members of their country. They are the future of Haiti!
