Agroecology – a Big Word to Achieve Big Results

Agroecology – a Big Word to Achieve Big Results

The social and governmental problems in Haiti that result in their cyclical poverty are compounded by drastic environmental and ecological changes happening since the 1950s. Combating these forces (“desertification”) is a complex issue and requires an integrated, holistic approach that considers ecology and society as a whole to improve Haiti’s food systems. “Agroecology” approaches sustainable agriculture practices scientifically but then teaches it as a way of life so that it gets adopted into the fabric of society. Wilner held a group activity with our ATC (Agricultural Training Center) students on Agroecology, letting them have group discussions and debate so they understand the interdependence of social behavior and successful sustainable food production.

The students discussed and considered all the biological, physical, and socio-economic interactions of their own gardens, their communities, and even the general landscape of Haiti. They are learning to work with nature rather than against it. These students will now be a positive force for helping their society to work together for better Agroecological practices that will lead them to food sovereignty, social equity, fair markets, and the empowerment of smallholder farmers. Farmer John’s agricultural exchange for animals, vegetables, and labor is a great working example of how this all comes together in real life.

When you support our Development for Sustainability programs, you are a part of this bigger project to help Haiti recover from cyclical poverty. God Bless you for Blessing others in this way.
