She wasn’t always this happy. Many years ago, we were in a remote village. I happened to be watching a very poor little girl, washing dishes (outside), and cooking for two families. I saw a huge pile of dirty clothes she was about to wash after she finished cooking for the two families!

I knew by watching her that she was a “restavek” slave child. (In Haiti, when a child loses both parents, they have to go and stay with relatives. The term restavek means “to rest with or stay with.”)

She was sent to relatives to “work.” Children in this situation do not get to go to school. We brought her to our orphanage.

But Lomene not only went to school, she went to college. She will graduate as a professional cook!

We love Lomene, “Laurie.” She knows how to cook!

After all, they say, “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!” We know the Lord will send her the right husband when it’s time!
