A Haitian Laughs, When He Should Cry

“A Haitian laughs, when he should cry.”- A Haitian Creole proverb.

What precious Haitian children! Their lives are so harsh, their food, so scarce, and yet, in their simplicity, they can manage a smile! These children of the mountains, do not have “three meals a day,” they are happy if they have one…

They are so poor and their parents can hardly afford for even one child to go to school. They live in small mud huts with dirt floors, which have roofs with sticks and cracks in them. They will most likely walk several hours with a five-gallon bucket to get water and have to carry it back home! They have no TV, no iPhones, no games, no dolls, and most have never had a pair of “real shoes,” just some worn-out flip flops.

Tonight, while our stomachs are full, their mothers will tell them to “sleep on their stomachs,” so they won’t feel the pains of hunger.” They are why we are still here in Haiti, amid all the violence and dangers we face every day.
