A Sick Mother, Son, a Blind Father, and a Four-Year-Old Boy…

This is probably one of the saddest stories I have seen in Haiti…

You will see pictures of Luckson’s mother, and how sick she is. I do not have a picture of 4-year Luckson, her son… But this is the true story from “Boulay,” Haiti, a village in the middle of nowhere.

Madamn Arismene (pictured) is a poor mother with three children, and of them is 4-year-old Luckson. Madamn Arismene’s husband went blind about 4 years ago and the family was evicted from their home because her husband could no longer work. They moved into a shack by the river, but it is in the middle of “nowhere.” There is no clean water, no trees, nothing… It is a desert.

Madamn Arismene had been sick for a long time, but even though she was sick, she tried to gather pieces of wood to sell… Her children were nearly starving to death. Little Luckson, age 4, decided to “lead his blind father down by the riverbed each day, to sit and crush rocks from the river.” Luckson made sure they were put in a pile… and Little Luckson also sat and crushed rocks by his blind father… no water to drink all day and no food and a sick mother to go home to.

When his mother cannot get out of bed, Luckson goes and fetches wild leaves to boil and makes a “tea” for her. What a brave little boy! When we heard of this family, we took food to them and took Madamn Arismene to our clinic. She was treated and given medicine, but she will be sent to another doctor, a heart specialist.

I told you this story about Luckson because even though I don’t have a picture of him, you already have a picture of a little boy leading his blind father to the river each day, helping him crush rocks and then searching for wild leaves to make his mother a tea when she is sick.

These are children and people that we cannot “shut our eyes” from.
