“Church” in Haiti is a very serious thing. There are some churches here in Haiti, who are in line with the newer, more modern churches like we have in the states. You could wear tennis shoes and blue jeans to these churches, but they are few. But the majority of Haitians still worship with the same hymns and the “same” respect for the House of God. HAITIANS, YOUNG AND OLD, WANT TO DRESS NICE FOR CHURCH!!!

I used to wonder why our Love A Child children, had to have “two pairs” of nice shoes, one for school and one pair for church. I told the house mothers, “they can wear the same shoes to church as to school.” “Oh, no, Madamn Sherry,” they said, horrified! They need a special, nice pair of shoes, “just for church.” All the children, young and old, said the same thing, “Mommie, when we go to school, we get marks on our shoes when we walk on the rocks.” “But,” they added, “we cannot wear those school shoes for church! They must be nice looking shoes, only for church!”

We are thankful to all of those who donate nice dresses for the girls here, but we are really in need of dress shirts, ties, long pants, and jackets for the boys. The other day, when we went to the wedding of Julia and Michael, one of our Love A Child boys sat next to me (age 15). He had on a short-sleeved shirt and all the other men and teenage boys had on jackets. He felt really embarrassed.

So, today, we are asking for dress shirts, ties, long pants, jackets (casual is fine), new or in good condition, for any boys age 6 on up to age 20… all sizes! Recently we received some of these items for boys and they were really excited… but, “boys grow!!” Before you know it, they are in “high waters!” Please, if you have any dress pants, nice black or brown shoes, and especially jackets, any size 6 to “young men’s”, or 6 to age 20, any sizes, please send them to:
