All the Agricultural Training Center staff were very glad to return to their gardens after the long Christmas / New Year holiday, and now they are busy at work in the sweet potato fields, getting ready to harvest. Sweet potatoes are a vegetable we often use in “intercropping” or planting together with another plant to benefit it. For instance, we frequently plant sweet potatoes together with papayas or other moisture-loving plants because the heavy leaf vegetation of the potato vines helps shade the soil around the papayas, keeping the roots cooler and moister, preserving irrigation water. Soon you will see pictures of a big sweet potato harvest. The ATC staff are also very excited to see the many mango trees blooming in the edible plant nursery. You can see the excitement on their faces as they know that many juicy, delicious fruits will be coming in early June.
We give a huge thank you to all of you who faithfully help support our important sustainability programs… “Haitians Helping Haitians” with food for life.
