Bernado’s Story… Dry, Moldy Bread and Water

Bernado is four years old. He is one of the many children who have been abandoned here in Haiti their father left for the Dominican Republic, never coming back. He does not know if Bernado is dead or alive, and he doesn’t care.

Madam St. Vil is Bernado’s mother. She is unable to care for him, and she has stress because of Bernado’s mental problems. She cannot go to work because anyone taking care of him cannot understand him or what he is needing.

Madam St. Vil was living on the street with Bernado. Every day was a struggle for them to eat. Since she could not find work, nor live with her son, Madamn St. Vil moved in with her sister… She, herself, had no job and no food, and certainly not enough for Bernardo and his mother. All she gave them each day was a piece of dry, moldy bread and water. Day by day, Bernado was tortured with hunger, and each day, it was worse.

She noticed a big change in Bernado… Now, he was extremely bloated and had a moon-shaped face… He was swollen… He was weak and hungry; his feet were swollen, and also his belly was. His mother said, “He was trying to resist death!”

Bernado and his mother used to live in a peaceful neighborhood, but now, it is full of bandits and gangsters! Many are dying of gunshot wounds, and the others are “dying of fear!”

She finally was convinced to take him to our Jesus Healing Center… Our doctors checked him too, and then, due to his frail condition, they could not let him go home. They sent him to our Malnutrition Center Clinic. When he first came in, he weighed 8.4 kg, and now, since he has been in there, he weighed 12.7 kg. We are thankful to those who sponsor our Malnutrition Center monthly and also to Feed My Starving Children for their nourishing rice mixture.

God bless everyone who cares about starving children.
