“Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knows not what a day may bring forth.” – Proverbs 27:1
When Bobby and I first moved to Haiti, we rented a house on top of a very steep mountain. It was called “Mountain Noire,” or “Black Mountain.” When it rained, you could never make it up the mountain, unless you had “four-wheel-drive,” and even then, it was dangerous. Bobby had an acquaintance, a Pastor from the States. He was deep in the “good confession” movement. You could not even sneeze and say “God bless you,” because “he was already blessed.” Any small thing you would say, he challenged it and made us look like the worst “non-believers” there was.
So, Mr. “Pastor” decided he wanted to have a Bible Seminar with the Haitian Pastors. (He would never go and visit our orphanage not even once because he said, “He didn’t come to Haiti to see the poor… he came to preach the Word!”) It was the time of year when rainy season was coming… We knew that all the Haitians in the mountains had been praying for rain for their little crops, and we were happy for the rain. That night, the Pastor was going to take our “pick-up truck” down to the Seminar, and back up. It was not “four-wheel-drive.” As we sat at the kitchen table, we heard the loud thundering outside. Bobby said, “Pastor, it’s going rain tonight and you won’t make it up the mountain!”
He got very indignant and said, “I’m a man of God and it won’t rain… because I’m preaching tonight.” Bobby tried to calm him and said, “Pastor, it’s gonna rain. This is an answer to prayer for the poor farmers… take my four-wheel-drive.”
“No,” he said. “I’m a man of God and it won’t rain! I’m preaching tonight!”
After the Pastor went down, Bobby and I were sitting and watching the rain come down… pouring rain and bangs of thunder. I said, “Maybe we should go and get him… or not?” We decided to go, because he would have been down there all night.
When we drove down to the bottom, he was leaning over the side of the truck, soaking wet, his white shirt and suit soaked… As we drove up he said, “Don’t say a word!”
Ha! We serve a God who knows everything… the Bible says, “Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knows not what a day may bring forth…” – Proverbs. 27:1
Even though he thought he was a “great man of God,” the little prayers of the poor, had already reached the throne first and God sent the rain… God has a sense of humor too.
Have a great day.
