This little girl from a poor mountain village (left side in the photo) has the signs of Kwashiorkor malnutrition. Unlike Marasmus malnutrition, which typically are skinny and boney children, Kwashiorkor kills more children and babies. They are not able to get rid of water retention. This type of malnutrition also affects their kidneys. This is what happened to our Jackson. Look how large his stomach was before. He was “so, so heavy,” but he was not fat. He was full of fluids. Haitian parents all want their babies and children to “look fat.” For this reason, they do not see the dangers of Kwashiorkor, until it is too late.

This is one reason we have the Jesus Healing Center, and the reason we are restructuring our Malnutrition Clinic. Instead of “sending food home” for these children to eat, we will have the mothers stay with their children until they reach the desired weight, or until Kwashiorkor or Marasmus malnutrition is no longer a danger. We also find these children during our Mobile Medical Clinics in the mountains, where there is no doctor, hospital, clinic or help of any kind.
