Usually, we share pictures and stories about life in Haiti on Sunday… basically, the majority of Haitians go to church. This is also a time to socialize with their friends. But, we thought you would like to know some “facts” about Haiti, the country we love, and the country God has called us to.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and probably, one of the poorest in the world. Located on the island of Hispaniola, Haiti shares 1/3 of the island with the Dominican Republic. The capital is Port-au-Prince and French is the official language (mostly spoken by the elite), Creole, a mixture of French, and several other languages, mostly spoken by the poor. There are “many high mountains” in Haiti. Due to its location, the country has a long history of earthquakes. A 7.2 struck in 2021, killing over 2,000 people.
There are approximately 1,000 people (or more), for every square mile. The majority of Haitians are of African origin. As for religion, although there are many devout Christians, there are also many who practice Voodoo, often combining it with the Catholic faith. Haiti has a tropical climate, although the majority of trees have been cut to make charcoal. Now, the soil on the surface cannot stop floodwaters.
President Jovenel Moise, their President, was assassinated in 2021. Since then, the country has been under the rule of Prime Minister Henry. Right now, Haiti is in the middle of political problems which has caused many areas to be unsafe.
We love the Haitian people. They are sweet, hard-working, and only want an education for their children… but books, schooling, and uniforms are not free.
The poor suffer so much, especially the children. Most poor Haitian children only eat one “meal” every two or three days… they “never” eat “three times a day.” Even in their misery, they manage a smile, a hug, or a greeting. They all hope that “Haiti will be better, tomorrow!” Many wonder why we don’t leave. You can leave a job, but you cannot leave “a calling.” We are here with “Hands on the Plough,” and “Boots on the Ground.” Thank you for loving Haiti!
