Most all Haitians believe in two things… “Jesus and tea!” In the states, you have all kinds of testing laboratories, scientists with the latest ideas, ventilators, tons of masks, and hospitals that “pop up” overnight. In Haiti, we have none of these things.
The Haitians that are Christians are “praying Christians.” They have been fasting and praying, and praying and fasting, that God will protect them. They have had to depend on Jesus in times when Americans can depend on everything else.
They have been praying, fasting, wearing masks… and even if they don’t have the money for a mask, they will make one… sometimes, “out of a ladies’ bra!”
But, all Haitians believe in “teas and herbs.” Several times, here in Haiti, Bobby had kidney stones. He was in excruciating pain and I didn’t know what to do for him. Gilbert, who works for us, automatically went out in the yard, picked some leaves, and made Bobby a “horrible tasting tea!” It was all he could do get it down. But, as soon as he drank it, he began to feel much better… the pain left and he later passed the kidney stones.
Since there is no help here in Haiti for a giant attack of coronavirus, the Haitian Christians spend hours in prayer. But, they are also making and drinking all kinds of Haitian teas, and with honey (if they can afford it). Their belief system is extremely strong. In the natural, the virus could kill more people than the earthquake, so who knows if God is hearing the prayers of the poor, and holding back the virus, as He did the Red Sea?
We all pray every day that this virus will be stopped. We are all tired of it and want our lives back to “normal.” But we all know that we must do everything we can do. For the Haitians, especially the poor, it’s Jesus first, masks and washing hands, and plenty of tea! The Bible says, “When we do all we can do, then stand.” Ephesians 6:13
