It’s hard to imagine that this “good-looking,” young teenager is the same “little toddler” who was beside the “huge hog on the ground” in the village of “Old Letant.” Years ago, we invited our friends from “Feed My Starving Children” to come with us during “food distributions!” Feed My Starving Children has been our partner for years. They are the ones who make the FMSC food, which is so healthy for starving children! Kaeli Fletcher was working with us at that time, doing missionary work. Bobby and the guys were there passing out food in this “mud-hut” village, when we noticed a Haitian mother grab a toddler by the arm and dump on him on the ground, right beside a huge hog!! We found out that “Little Nelson” could not talk or walk! His mother would just drop him, “naked,” on the ground, “on his knees,” in the hot sun! Kaeli was there with me. We were so angry to see this that we went over and picked up the naked little boy. He instantly “wrapped his arms around my neck!” It was all I could do to keep from crying…
We asked his mother if we could take him into our orphanage… she and her husband agreed! We took Nelson back to our orphanage, fed him, and put him in a crib! The next day, we tried to show him how to “hold on” to his crib bars, but all he could do was cry! He just “could not stand” by himself!! A few days later, we bought a small, tiny tricycle! He learned to stand beside it and to “hold on,” as he made little steps! In no time at all, little Nelson was riding the tricycle and walking!
Nelson is now 16 years old and in junior high! He makes good grades and loves to “dress up” and go to church! The Bible says that the “Lord lifts up the beggar from the dunghill.” Nelson is thankful for all that the Lord has done for him. Sherry
