Georges Can Drive Anything!

Georges… My favorite thing about him is his sweetness, his shyness, and his great smile. He is one of the hardest-working kids at our Love A Child Children’s Home. Years ago, I went to a large pharmacy in Port-au-Prince to buy medicine. The ladies behind the counter knew me and knew that we had an orphanage. One lady said, “I know a mother who has many children, and no way to feed them and is pregnant.” She said she was going to leave her baby in the hospital because she could not feed “one more child.” She told me where the lady was (in a very bad section of Port-au-Prince). She asked me to go and see her. I did, and I told her not to leave the baby in the hospital, but that we would take it and raise it.

Then, “Hurricane Georges” hit Haiti. We received a call from the lady at the pharmacy and she said, “the poor woman just had the baby before she could make it to the hospital. Go to her quickly.” When I arrived in that bad area of town, there she was with another baby in a hopeless situation. We took Georges back with us. He was always “a little spoiled” by Celita, who cared for him at the orphanage, (smile).

Georges began driving a backhoe, front-end loader, and anything with wheels when he was about 12. One of our Dominican mechanics, Joker, had been teaching him! Today, Georges is still sweet (a little heavy on the foot sometimes) but very sweet and when he is in trouble, he is always sorry. He has never been arrogant or rebellious. He can drive “anything!”

About a year after we took Georges in, his mother had another baby, a little girl. When the baby was a year old, she died, and we took the baby in. She is Stephanie, Georges’s sister. Georges loves his sister with all his heart, and now he has a little “nephew,” Christian. It has really been a challenge and a large story, raising all these children, after raising two of our own! But, “Love is Something You Do!” Sherry
