Of all the years living here in Haiti, this is “my favorite photo.” We were working deep in the mountains… and it had been a rough trip up the mountains! Some of us had mules that we shared while others walked. The hot Haitian sun was beating down on us when we saw this sweet little mountain boy on a donkey, with a large load to take back to his parents. To us, the walk in the hot sun was grueling, but the little boy and his donkey, they had work to do! He stopped to greet us with a “big smile!”
Bobby and I have always had a warm heart for the children of Haiti. There is a Haitian Creole proverb that says, “A Haitian laughs when he should be crying.” This little boy had a lot of work to do, and the sun was shining… and the trip would be long. But to him, it was “just another day” in Haiti. This is why “Haiti stays deep in our hearts.”
