Danielo is one of our older boys, age 16. He is sweet, mostly quiet, and gentle. I first saw Danielo when I went to the village we called “Old Letant.” He was with a group of poor mothers who were trying to figure out “whose turn it was to feed him.” (His father had left, and his mother had died.)
Danielo was about three, or less. All we knew was that his father had abandoned him, and his mother had died, leaving him “to die.” And now, the village people were giving him their “scraps” of leftover food. (Hardly anything!)
I offered to take him, not knowing he had severe mental problems. Since then, he has “disappeared several times,” and our older boys have had to hunt him down. Last month, he broke into our depot with another boy, and then “admitted he did it.”
He is not dangerous, but it takes “all his brothers” to keep him out of trouble. His favorite thing is our two dogs, “Blackie and Lou.”
Mental illness is everywhere…. but here in Haiti, there is no hope, nor any help, for this “sweet young teenager,” and others. I visited a place in Haiti in a hospital once, for children who had mental illness… they were “tied to the beds!” I will never forget it!!
We need your prayers for Danielo. We love him.
