How Does it Feel to Live with a House Full of Kids?

When the Lord called us to Haiti, we had “no idea in the world” that it would involve an orphanage full of kids… a total of 85 in all. Some have married, and two are overseas in college, and fourteen are in College here in Haiti. There are more boys than girls, but that’s good because there is plenty of work, always!

I can honestly say, “I have never seen a fight between any two of the kids…” They may have a little “spat” with one another, but it never lasts. They all have “chores” to do, and they all have “homework,” and they have additional studies after school. Monday through Friday, each night is “church” down in our cafeteria. We have young girls in charge of the “praise and devotional service.” I love to hear them sing, especially when the Spirit of God takes over, and you can feel His presence everywhere!!

The boys are in charge of keeping the courtyard clean, feeding the animals, and keeping their two new “Rotties” out of trouble!! The girls are “always girls!” They love to braid their hair, and the teenage girls always try to look their best at school. We are constantly embedded in hugs and kisses.

Through all these years, we have come to realize that these children don’t consider themselves “orphans,” nor do they think that they are in an “orphanage.” They are bonded to us and to each other and they feel that this is their “home.”

Christmas, Easter, and Birthday parties will always bring memories. They are totally “glued together,” as if they were all born of the same parents! They will “make a better Haiti.” They are compassionate, hard-working, huggable, and sweet!

It all started with a promise that I made to a sick and dying Haitian mother… She said to me, “I have four children and no husband. Promise me that when I die, you will take my children.”

I gave her my promise that day. She died a short time later, and we came back with four little orphaned children in the back of our car!

We wish to thank you, our partners, for all your help, love, encouragement, and financial support.

God richly bless you.

Sherry
