We moved to Haiti on July 1st, 1991. We NEVER thought of opening an orphanage. Who in the world would want to do that? We made the long trip to L’Artibonite, a village we worked in. The people told us of a grandma who had four kids to raise, and she was dying. When I went to see her, she pulled me close and asked me to promise her that when she died, we would take in her four kids! Who could tell a dying woman “no?” We told her we would take care of them, but I prayed all the way home for God to “keep grandma alive!”
The day came when we were called to the village. As we came in, the whole village was standing there waiting for us with four hungry and frightened Haitian kids! We put them in our truck and headed home. They were sick and had infections, so we had to hire a nurse to care for them. She had to come every day to give them shots. We found a building to rent, and soon the four became eight, then ten, etc.
Since then, some have gone to the United States and gotten jobs, some are in the Dominican Republic, some in other countries, but they all came from “humble beginnings.” It has been a long road home. Thank you to all our friends and partners.
