There is no greater blessing or “no greater treasure” than giving to the poor or taking care of the poor. It doesn’t “have” to be in Haiti or any other foreign country… the “poor” may be living next to you.
Luke 12:33 says, “Sell that ye have, and give alms…” In other words, Jesus is saying that “giving alms” (blessing the poor) is not only what we are required to do, but that’s where the real blessing comes! I knew from the time “before I was in school” that I would be doing missionary work. I wanted to be able to give to the poor, because “we” were poor. My mother “showed us” how to live by faith. When we were out of food, she would pray… and a neighbor would soon come “knocking on our door to bring us milk, or meat from a butchered cow.”
I knew that “someday” God would send me to another land to help the poor and give the Gospel. Learn to “listen with your heart,” instead of your ears… that’s how God speaks to us.
