Haiti’s children are “survivors.” When a child’s parents die, they automatically go to live with a relative. They become a “restavek.” This word means “to live with” or “rest with,” but the children get “no rest.”
In fact, these children will “work as hard as an adult.” They will never be treated like “family,” never go to school, and never have “hope.” Jean Edward was about six when we visited the village and saw him carrying a heavy “five-gallon water jug” on his head, building a fire, and cooking for his large “family” by himself!!
We had a team from Feed My Starving Children there, and they were with us as we told his relatives, “He’s coming home with us.”
As he got a little older, he would sew up the pants of the older boys who wanted “skinny pants” for school. He was sewing by hand and doing alterations!! He had a love for sewing!!
Our friends and partners began to send in sewing machines. He began to teach others how to sew!
This new machine arrived recently so he will be able to teach others how to use this machine!
He is kind and humble and loves the Lord! Jean Edward is studying Spanish so that he can go to college in the D.R. next year!
Let us know your thoughts and comments!!
God bless you.
