Jean Edwouard… Fulfilling His Passion

The cooks lovingly call him “Direk or Director.” He is tall, handsome, and kind… I first met this “young boy” in the village of Old Letant. The group from Feed My Starving Children had come to Haiti to help with our “food distributions.” While Bobby was talking to Mark Crea of FMSC, I noticed a little boy carrying water, making a fire, and putting a pot on the “stove,” which consisted of three rocks. He was cooking for a large family who had been eying him, to make sure he was working. I knew he was a “restavek slave child” and went to talk to him.

When I found out what the little boy was saying, I decided to take him home. No one stopped me, because “slavery” is frowned on, but no one is stopping it. We sent Jean Edwouard to school, but I soon found out something “strange.” The older boys had him sewing their pant legs to get the “skinny look!” I was so mad at those boys! But, I soon learned that he “just loved to sew!

Jean Edwouard wants to design and make beautiful clothes, men’s suits, women’s wedding gowns, and all kinds of beautiful clothing! He is studying Spanish now so that he can go to college in the Dominican Republic, and have his own business! He is thankful to Love A Child and our partner who sent him a beautiful sewing machine! He is kind, and has never raised his voice! Everyone loves him!
