Jean Gardy, The “Banker”

Jean Gardy was very small when his mother died. His father had no job and could not take care of him. He asked us if he could bring his son to our orphanage and that was why we took him in. He first moved into our “old, over-crowded orphanage” and yet, he was happy! But the day we moved into the larger orphanage (Children’s Home), he could not believe all the “space” we had!

Jean Gardy loves soccer and helping with construction projects but, he was born with a “business head” on his shoulders! He not only made high grades in school but when I gave him a little money for some chores, he saved it! He began to buy cokes, drinks, and cookies, and store them in “his bedroom.” Then, without me knowing it, he bought a teeny-weeny refrigerator and stored drinks, and then, he could sell “cold drinks.” He bought chips and cookies and re-sold them to the other kids! Then, when cell phones came, he set up “Pap Padap,” phone credits. He could put “minutes” on his phone and re-sell them!

Then, I found out one day that he was picking up all the kids’ “school food money and tap tap money,” for school. I got so upset and told all our kids that from now on, “everyone is responsible for their own money.” But, I got a jolt when all the older kids said, “Mom, we all prefer Jean Gardy to keep our money for us and give it to us we need it!” And, he is never short “one gourde!” He is so good with business and money. He is extremely honest! He has now joined his “brothers,” Dieuferly and Franceau, to make a little “snack business” on our property. He is really good with money!

He is now 22 and at University INUKA to study accounting! He is a sweet kid, very obedient, and we all love Jean Gardy, “the banker!” Sherry

P.S. Jean Gardy is very “small” for his age. One day, about a year ago, I saw him driving one of our big “flatbed” trucks! He is so short, he can barely see above the wheel! I was so upset! I yelled at him, “Jean Gardy, who told you that you could drive this flatbed? You don’t even have a license! Get down from there.” He sweetly replied, “But Mom, I’ve had my license for a year now, and I’ve been driving trucks all over the property!” I thought He’s probably making money, teaching other “brothers” how to drive! Ha!
