Jean Richard, Our Musician

His name is Jean Richard Volmar. He developed cerebral palsy when he was very small but his mother grew ill and could not care for him and he was sent to a handicapped orphanage. That building was destroyed during the 2010 earthquake, so we brought him to our Love A Child Children’s Home.

It was quite different from what he was accustomed to. Now, he was in a children’s home, where everyone else was “normal” and he was the only one who could not walk. But, his wonderful, gentle attitude changed things. He noticed that we had a keyboard, but the young man who played for us had gone to the Dominican Republic. That changed Richard’s life! That keyboard became his great source of joy! He began to play in our “children’s services” at night. He got so good, that other churches “borrowed him” to play for crusades. He then learned bass guitar and drums. Then, he began teaching his younger brothers and sisters the keyboard, drums, and the bass guitar!

He wants to be a “fabricator,” (one who designs things like walkers!) A few years ago, one of our partners sent him a “tri-bike,” which has big wheels on the back. Now, he can ride to school and this helps strengthen his muscles. Richard does not “feel sorry for himself.” Instead, he considers himself “blessed, indeed.” He says “I can be anything I want to be, because God is in control!”

We are so proud of Richard! We love listening to the children “practice,” on the guitar, keyboard, and drums! And yes, I know there is a God because we were able to move the “music room and the drums” to another area rather than “right below my living room!” Thank you, Jesus!

We love you, Richard! We are so proud of you!!!
