Jonas: A Real Blessing

Jonas: A Real Blessing

He’s just 16 years old and already in Rheto, his next-to-last class in school. His name is Jonas, and he is from the mountains of Demesseau. One day, as we were filming for one of our TV programs, we were in the truck getting ready to leave when a poor father frantically appeared at my truck window. (Bobby was in the driver’s seat.) The man said his wife had died leaving him with many children and a new baby. The father begged, “Please take this baby!” At that time, we were in a small building for our orphanage. We had no more room left, and the government of Haiti did not want us to take in any children. When the father begged, Bobby said sweetly, “Baby, we can’t take in any more kids. You know they can close our orphanage. Tell the father, ‘We are sorry, but we cannot take him.'” I felt so bad. So, I told the man in Creole, “Bobby is going to the States next week, bring the baby then. He’ll never know we have ‘one more!'” That’s what happened. When Bobby got back, he looked around at all of the kids and babies and he said, “I don’t remember that little guy.” I said, “He’s been here a little while… that’s Jonas!” (Smile.) Jonas does very well in school. He loves getting an education, and he loves soccer. Right now, he is learning about plumbing because the schools haven’t opened yet due to all of the violence and roadblocks! Jonas is a sweet kid and a real blessing! We all love Jonas! Sherry
