There is no one like our sweet Jonas! Many of our friends know that he was a “restavek” slave child! Restavek means “to live with!” When a child loses their mother and father, they go live with a relative, but life will be more difficult. For Jonas, he was made to “work like a man” in the hot sun! And he would receive very little food, lots of beatings, and no love! When we first saw Jonas, I cried. He was afraid of everyone. We decided to bring him home with us. He was scared to death thinking the white people would eat him! It took a long time for him to adjust to food, laughter, and lots of hugs!
Today, Jonas goes to school with children much younger than him, but he doesn’t mind! He is sweet, kind, hardworking, and “thankful!” God bless our wonderful partners who save lives every day here in Haiti.
