It is not uncommon in Haiti, for a father to abandon his children if his wife dies. Who will go a long way to the market? Who will wash the clothes, and clean and cook, (where is the food)? And, how can a father work all day in the garden if there is no one to take care of his children? This is what happened to Joseph and his sister, Sarah. Their mother, Elicia Felix died and their father abandoned Joseph and his sister, Sarah. Both children had Kwashiorkor malnutrition so badly that the doctor thought they may not live. They were brought down from the mountains to our “orphanage.”
Joseph is a sweet, gentle, calm young man. He is in his last grade at school and when he is finished, he wants to go to a good mechanic school. He is a hard worker. When he is not in school, he is on the “painting team.” (That is what I call, “job security!” We are always painting something!!)
We love Joseph and his sister, Sarah! I just wish he would cut that beard! Ha! I don’t know what it is about young Haitian men, they all think they have to have a beard! If it were possible, they would be starting one at the age of three! When the first “whisker” appears, they carefully groom it, so it will become a beard!!! (I’m all about passing out razors!!! Ha!)
Joseph will become a great mechanic! He is steady and careful, and we can always count on him. He loves “all that mechanic stuff!” We all love Joseph!!
