Kristela Is Everyone’s Favorite

Kristela has always been one of everyone’s favorite here at the Children’s Home!!! She is “tom-boy-ish,” and as someone said, “you could throw her ten feet, and she would bounce!” She is tall, thin, and always in motion!!

We were in a Mobile Clinic in Savaan Pit when Kristela’s mother, pregnant, was brought to us. We knew she was dying, and we treated her as much as we could…but we knew there was no hope for her. Her mom was deeply involved in Voodoo. And so were Kristela’s grandmother and great-grandmother. When they came to our Mobile Clinic, they had all wore the “Voodoo” clothing. However, we had the opportunity of praying for Kristela’s mother, and she accepted Jesus before she died. She was buried at our church in Savaan Pit.

A short time later, Kristela’s father arrived at our orphanage with tears in his eyes and a malnourished baby in his arms. We could not say “no.” Kristela was covered with sores and had severe malnutrition.

We brought her in, and it took a “long time” for her hair to turn black. As she grew, she developed a “mischievous” personality! She was “always into something!” As she grew and matured, she turned out to be one of the sweetest and hardest working children we have! She will clean up any mess, she will do the hardest work or the filthiest jobs…and never, never complain. She always has that same sweet smile on her face, and it never goes away! She is a special girl. She has three more years of high school, and then she wants to be a “massage therapist,”…she said she wants to be able to “find the pain and work it out of the body!” She is small and very strong!

Kristela is “different” than all the other children…that’s what makes “Kristela, Kristela!” We love this kid!
