Haiti… land of misery.

After all the months of hearing about how we should take in illegal immigrants who need asylum and take them out of their poverty, I ask myself, “well, what about little Haiti?” It is only one hour and forty-five minutes by plane from Miami. The Haitian people are in a country that is now a “war zone.” Many good missionaries have left, and the ones of us who still remain, take our lives in danger each day. There could be a roadblock with gangs in town, or burning tires… there are gangs with bigger guns than the police have, so the police are outnumbered.

Many times, we cannot get to places to deliver food to hungry children, and I mean, “hungry.” Just look at these malnourished children with red hair and bloated bellies. I did not see any kids that looked like this “climbing over our wall!” In fact, these poor, malnourished children couldn’t make that long trip anyway, because they would have died from starvation along the route. I do not understand why no one cares about Haiti? No one is sending us help!

When we pick up people from the airport, like someone who “has” to come in and work on our projects, we often have to send a police escort and pay them, or we have to send one of our guys who can “outrun the thugs!”

There was a boat full of Haitians recently that tried to make it to the states and guess what, they were turned back! When we do get to go places like the garbage dump and give food to the families, I really wonder if anyone cares or knows that these people exist? I am just sick to my heart and I cry a lot. I just can’t understand why so many people get “asylum,” but asylum from what? They certainly deserve it if they were being shot at, or raped by the gangs here, or had their father or mother murdered in front of them, but no one is saying that. I just feel that no government officials care about Haiti and no one is sending “help” to the poor. The mothers cannot even go to the market to buy and sell, because there are so many guys with BIG GUNS!

We have had to cancel all our teams until next year, due to violence here in Haiti. I am asking all of you, who care about the poor, to pray that God will send some kind of “strong help” to Haiti. I have tears running down my eyes as I write this… Thank you, Sherry
