Moses… the Prodigal Son

“From the Outhouse to the Big House…” I can remember the day that the Social Services in Haiti brought Moses to us. His mother did not want another child so she went to the outhouse to give birth and dropped him down into the filth. An older Haitian man heard the whimpering cry and broke the outhouse toilet and tied a rope around his waist and went down with a bucket. He brought up a tiny baby covered with feces, that was still alive. After the village ladies cleaned him up, he was sent to the hospital and they called us to ask if we could take him.

Moses was always intelligent, but he went through some of those “teenage” things, thinking he was “cool.” I decided he needed a “come back to Jesus” experience, so I sent him to the mountains far away to be with our Haitian Pastor. There, Moses had to carry water, work in the fields, sleep on the dirt floor on a mat, and do without many things. He stayed for the summer vacation and when I talked to the Pastor, it was time for the “prodigal son” to come home. Since that day, he has become the old Moses that we all loved!

He is now 16, in 9th grade, a hard worker, and happier than he has ever been! He is the “old Moses” we had loved! His dream is to be a great mechanic! Our vehicles break down all the time due to the roads, so I’m sure he will have a “lifetime job!” We all love Moses!!!
