Alfred has been working with us here in Haiti since before the earthquake. He has always done a great job, making sure the food is cooked for visitors, etc. He is sweet, quiet, and never “confronts or challenges authority.” You could say, “he is the Love A Child Employee Poster Child.” He can always be found in our depot… He drives a little cart so that he can take food to our employees.
I reminded him this morning of a “trick” we played on him years ago… We had been working up in the mountains, doing a Mobile Clinic. We finished the Mobile Clinic, and came down to Love A Child, to our depot. We told Alfred that a “man we were taking care of” had died “en route” to the clinic, and that the morgue was closed! We asked him if we could “put the guy into our freezer, until the Morgue opened the next day!”
Poor Alfred! He didn’t want to say “no” to Madamn Sherry, but he was so scared about “putting the guy in our freezer,” overnight! He said, “Madamn Sherry, I don’t think it’s a good idea… when the cooks come to make food, and when they open the freezer, they will see the man in the freezer, and run away and we won’t have anyone to cook for us!” It was hard to keep from laughing, so we finally told Alfred that it was a “trick!” The poor guy!! I think he almost had a heart attack! We had a good laugh about that day! Alfred “passed the test!”
