Nelson… He Shouldn’t Be Alive…

I remember the day like it was “yesterday.” Mark Crea came to Haiti with a “Feed My Starving Children” team! We were in the village of Old Letant! Bobby was interviewing Mark for our TV program. I was back near a hut.

I watched as a woman picked up a dirty toddler by “one arm” and dropped him on the ground, naked, in the heat of the sun… next to a big hog!!

I watched as the little toddler sat on his heels with his knees on the ground. Kids went by and smacked him on the head and called him names… one name was “Pa benzoin-ou.” (I don’t need you; I don’t want you!)

I had tears in my eyes with extreme anger in my heart! I knew his mother, and I wanted to “punch her lights out!” I picked up the naked child, and he threw his arms tightly around my neck! When I came to her hut, I said, “Your child will die, but I can take him, and he will live.”

“Take him,” she said!

“Take him!” She said she wanted to put clothes on him, but I told her, “It was fine,” because I had clothes. I hurried toward the truck, and we took off.

It wasn’t long before “Nelson” started to walk and run and do “flips and cartwheels!”

Today, Nelson is 13, going into the 7th grade, does a great job keeping our yard clean, and always wants to help! I have learned to listen to the “still small voice!”

That “still small voice” will always lead you to do the right thing.
