Nelson’s Story

We have had so many comments about Nelson, that I wanted to share his story for those of you who have never heard it. I had seen this child when he was about three, in the mud-hut village of Letant. His mother and father lived together, but not sure if all the children were from the same mother. His father was deep in Voodoo and his mother, not a Christian either.

Each time I went there, he was always sitting on the ground, naked… but sitting on his knees. He would be in the hot sun all day without water or food. Kids would come by and hit him on the head and call him, “pa bazouin,” I don’t need you, or you’re not needed.

Because he could not stand or walk or talk, his father and mother thought it was Voodoo. They never fed him enough, hoping he would die. But one day, when we were in the village with Feed My Starving Children, the Lord spoke to my heart, and said, “take him home or he will die.” I picked up the dirty naked little boy and told his mother and father I would take him to our orphanage so that he would live. They were glad to get rid of him.

After working with him a while, he began to stand and walk and run and talk! We put him in preschool and he soared!  Underneath all that dirt and filth was a bright young man, with a great smile, and a wonderful intelligence! Today, Nelson loves sports! He does “acrobats” and “flips, and loves soccer! Most of all, he loves Jesus! He makes tears come into my eyes, just looking at him. That is how God sees us… not with our filth and nakedness, not with our bloated bodies full of worms in the world, but He sees us “as we CAN BE!”

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” saith the Lord, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end!” What is the expected end? The goodness of God! Sherry
