Our Jean Edwouard

Our Jean Edwouard

I remember the first day I saw him, as if it were yesterday! We were in the village of “Old Letant,” and the group from Feed My Starving Children was there with us. I saw this skinny little boy carrying large buckets of water on his shoulder, and he was also stirring a big pot of “something” over an open fire. I looked over to see a large family, talking and laughing while this tiny little boy was watching over the fire!

I later found out that the little boy’s parent/parents had died, and now he was a “restavek.” (This is a Creole word that means “to rest, or stay with.”) We took him in when he was about six or seven, and I soon noticed that all the older boys wanted their school uniforms to have “skinny legs.”  So, they asked little Jean Edwouard to sew up their pant legs to make them “skinnier.” When he finished high school, one of our partners sent him a sewing machine… and he really began to put his talent to work!

This picture was taken on a day when we were passing out rice and chicken to the poor. We are proud of our older children who take a lot off our shoulders by helping us with our food distributions! Thank you, partners!
