A Compassionate Heart…

Dear Friends and Partners,

We have worked hard to teach our Haitian children all about “God’s compassion!” It is so important to always keep our hearts open to a “special need.” Dieuferly, who had major health problems as a child, now is a grown young man. We have always taught our two children in the States, and also our Haitian children to have “a heart of compassion.”

We were really touched by the story of a poor, crippled woman with 7 children and a “broken down wheelchair.” Dieuferly, who operates our drone and does camera and TV work, saw this widow with a broken down wheelchair and no place to go, and took care of her with love and compassion… read below his “thank note” to Bobby and me. We are so proud of him, and our orphanage children, and our two grown children in the States. We all must have a “compassionate heart.”

Thank you so much, Mom and Dad, for making it possible today, the lady was so grateful. Amanthe Dorcly Is 41 years old, and she has 7 children. In 2004, she was living in Gonaïve, during the troubles when Aristide had left power, and she was shot in the shoulder, and the bullet hit her spine. She had to enter the Dominican Republic for surgery, and since then she couldn’t walk she stayed in the DR for all this time for medical attention. She was living with her husband Woodbert, who kicked her out with their two babies. When she couldn’t run, the immigration deported her back to Haiti on the Malpasse side, and she found herself homeless, sleeping in a little park at Lasous among the market sellers.

Thank God today we found a lady inside Miracle Village who is willing to receive her in her house and help her. Her wheelchair was not good, Amanthe but now she has a new wheelchair, mattress, and pillows — giving her hope and comfort once again. God is good!

The God of Restoration…

Have you ever had a great loss in your life? Maybe it was your job? Maybe you lost your car or house because you could not make the payments? Joel 2:25 declares, “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.”

We have all suffered some type of loss in our life. Maybe you had your car repossessed, or you could not make the payment on your house, or whatever… Those “things” God is able to restore! Years ago, when we were preaching on the streets, we had a new truck and could not make payments on it! GMAC was always after it!! But there came a time of blessing in our lives, when God did restore all the things that the locust, and the cankerworm, and the palmerworm had eaten! Get ready for “restoration,” and begin to praise Him before He does it! Now, that’s faith!

Blessings,
Sherry

Dieubon: AKA… “Spongebob!”

The name “Dieubon” means “God is good.” But if you had looked at this little toddler trying to “hobble around” with two clubbed feet, and born into a very poor family, you might wonder why a mother would name her baby “God is good.”

Nevertheless, God had a plan. We had a Mobile Clinic team come to Haiti and one of the people on the team was Dr. Chester Falterman. When Dr. Barthelemy saw the little boy with clubbed feet, “he was moved with compassion!” Together they found a surgeon for Dieubon in the States, and he received the best of care. When Dieubon was dismissed from the hospital, the Faltermans took Dieubon in and cared for him and Dieubon began to walk!

Today, Dieubon is a young man and is on our “painting team!” (They usually give him the baseboards!) I don’t like the beard, but all young Haitian guys say that Haitian girls love beards! Ha! I guess we will have to hire “security” to keep him safe! Ha!

Desperation at the Wall

Sadly, a very small child’s remains were discovered a few minutes ago near the wall of the Love A Child compound here. The section of a 10-foot high wall is close to where the clinic used to be. This area is not frequented by people. One of the security guys discovered the remains while performing a security check in a locked area.

We asked Dr. Barthelemy to examine the body. He said it has been here for a very long time. There are only bones. The heat of the Haitian sun probably sped up decomposition. The skull was fractured. The legs were broken beneath the femur, folded against the torso. The child was wrapped in warm clothes, a blanket, and a sweatshirt and was still hanging on the razor wire above.

Because of the clothing, we think that the child was from the mountains, and was sick or malnourished. This precious person was most likely thrown over the wall in the hopes of being rescued. The way the body was lying, Dr. Barthelemy does not believe they survived the long fall.

I cannot imagine the desperation of a mother or father so in need of assistance that they would be willing to risk the life of their child for the prospect of help. The risk of the fall was deemed to be a better choice than starvation or the suffering of sickness.

We have had several babies dropped off at the gate or left behind within the walls. It is not new. People here are desperate. But this poor child probably did not cry out. The plunge to the hard ground below was too much.

My heart bleeds for these poor people. This was someone’s son or daughter. Thousands of people just outside our wall need help. The situation is awful. They need Love A Child to continue to feed the poor, provide health care to the sick and broken, and show them who God is by what we do!

HAITI LATEST NEWS UPDATE:

Sherry and I arrived back in Haiti yesterday. This time, we did not share our travel plans for security reasons. Oh, it was so good to see the children! They were so happy!

Jesse Ostrander has been doing a great job. He gets a lot done. He knows how to walk the dog!

Our security guards, who protect Love A Child, Farmer John’s, and Fond Parisien, are doing a great job! They are very strong. We have elite police and special forces from America. They are not here to attack the gangs or hurt anyone. They are here to defend Love A Child and our area.

I would advise the gangs not to even come close.

The community brigade is out night and day. They do not take prisoners. The government police are also doing a great job in our buffer zone.

Thank you. In the middle of all of this, we are expanding going forward, blessing the Haitian people. More news on this within the next two days.

Thank you for your prayers and support.

“When we’re at our worst, God is at His best!”

The story of the Israelites and their battle with Pharaoh and the Red Sea has such a deep message… After 400 years of slavery in total bondage, being tortured, beaten, and many killed, they are set free by the God of Israel whom they have completely forgotten about. God chooses again “the most unlikely man” for the job… Timid Moses.

You would have thought that if God was really going to deliver them, the first thing He would do would be to “soften the heart” of Pharaoh! After all, haven’t you ever prayed, “Oh God, soften their heart and give me favor with them?” We all have, but instead, the Bible says that the Lord told Moses, “but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go.” (Exodus 4:21)

Now why in the world would God do that? And all those plagues!! Then, of course, the Red Sea… The Israelites actually ended up “going the long way around” to get to the promised land, which should have taken a much shorter time.

Today, maybe you are facing “the wrath of Pharaoh,” or maybe even “facing the Red Sea.” God could have fixed this problem quicker and easier, but then you would not have recognized that “God still has a better plan…” And when we’re at our “worst,” God is at His best!

The Bible says, “for my strength is made perfect in [your] weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) I put the word “your” in there because God doesn’t have any weaknesses, so He must be talking about “our weakness.”

God, in His wonderful plan, wanted to show His people, the Israelites, that He is still the “God of the way out!” So, today, when you’re at your worst, “God is fixin’ to do His best!” Sherry

Genius Mechanic

A good mechanic can diagnose the problem, figure out what parts are needed, obtain the parts, and install them so that the vehicle continues to operate. A genius mechanic is an entirely different level of repairman!

Joker is our top mechanic here in Haiti. He can fix anything with an engine. He is a master-level tinkerer, troubleshooter, renovator, jack-of-all-trades, and overall genius when it comes to keeping our many machines operable.

Thank God for our mechanic team! They literally keep Love A Child moving.

“Judge not, that ye be not judged…” Matthew 7:1
When my mother was alive, she was a “saint.” She never spoke ill of anyone, and she loved everyone, but most of her friends were kinda “nutty.” She had one friend, who was supposed to be a “lady preacher.” I will just call her Wanda. Wanda had long, straggly dark hair, a wart on her nose and bad breath, but she always claimed to be so holy. (But, she really liked men!) One day, Bobby and I were sitting in a little restaurant, eating, when Madamn “Holier-than-thou” walked in. I looked at Bobby, hoping she would not come to our table, because she always had a “word from the Lord” for us, and it was never good! She looked at me and said, “Sister Burnette, the Lord told me to tell you that you wear too much make-up and you are going to hell!” I looked at Bobby, who tried to keep on eating, not saying a word. I said, “Sister Wanda, it may be a sin for some of us to wear make-up, but it is a greater sin for some of us not to wear make-up!” She got so mad and huffed away. Some people go around judging all the time. We only have one judge, and His name is Jesus. Today, He is our Savior! Tomorrow, He is our Judge! Have a great day. Sherry

Luckson

It’s really hard for me to believe that Luckson is 11 and will be in 7th grade! Wow! What a smart kid!

He’s a funny little guy! He has chores, like taking care of the dogs, picking up trash, mopping floors, etc.!

He hasn’t decided yet whether he wants to teach school or become a doctor, but whatever career he chooses, he will be good at it! He’s a serious little guy!

Luckson loves soccer and “jumping into our plastic swimming pool” on a hot day! His favorite food is goat!

He will do anything asked of him, and yes, he loves church, too!!

All he wants for Christmas is his tooth! Ha!
