LAC Shipping Explained

After the update post about the gang situation on Monday, we have received some questions in regard to shipping. Some people have asked how we are still able to ship food and supplies to Love A Child because of the gang situation. Wouldn’t that make it impossible to ship? The answer is simple. We are unable to ship through Port-au-Prince. All of the roads that lead to the ports are now controlled by the gangs.

Anything Love A Child ships to Haiti must be sent through the Dominican Republic. The containers coming from the States by boat arrive in Santo Domingo and are then trucked to the Dominican border at Jimani. Although the border is technically closed to people crossing back and forth, there is currently an ability to cross with commercial freight.

Love A Child is located very close to the Dominican border. To the east of us is the Dominican Republic. Directly to the west of us are the gangs and “gang-controlled” territory. Although the gangs have been entering closer and closer, the road to the east remains accessible.

Please pray that God keeps this supply chain open. Thousands of people here in Haiti depend on this food and medicine. It is very expensive to ship everything this way, but God is faithful. Thank you for continuing to support this ministry! Without you, shipping food and medicine to Haiti would be impossible.

When You’re Blessed by God, You’re Blessed, Indeed!

I love the book of the Numbers, especially chapters 22 and 23! If you’re bored, read about the “talking ass!” That should wake you up!!!

Balak was the king of Moab, the son of Zippor. (His name, Balak, means “empty, wasting, or to lay to waste!”) He was looking for a “prophet,” or someone who could “curse” the Israelites! Balak did everything he could to find someone to “curse” the people of Israel… He finally found “Balaam,” a non-Israelite prophet or diviner. He lived in Pethor. (His name meant, “one who makes a profit from religion.”) Balak was always saying, “Come, curse me Jacob, and come defy Israel!”

After lots of pleading with Balak, the Lord sent Balaam a “word from the Lord” for Balak…

Numbers 23:19-20: “God is not a man that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said and shall He not do it? Or hath He spoken and He shall not make it good? Behold I have received commandment to bless: and He hath blessed, and I cannot reverse it.”

I know a lot of Christians believe that someone can put a “curse” on you. The Haitian people “live in fear” that someone will do this to them. But to all God’s children, “When you’re blessed, you’re blessed, indeed!” Satan cannot reverse it! God is on your side!

He’s Not Afraid of Work!

At 5:00 a.m. at our Love A Child Children’s Home, Lionel is already up and out in the courtyard, ready to work! Even though it is barely daylight, Lionel and the kids have already heard the “horn” go off and Mr. Camy has the volume button turned up to “10!” It means, “Mommie Sherry says it’s time to get up and go to work boys and girls!” They will be cleaning their rooms, mirrors, showers, etc., along with watering all the plants!

Lionel is “not afraid of work!” You see, when he was about six years old, Lionel was waiting to get a bite of food from the big pot where his mom was cooking. After all the kids ate, Lionel stuck his hand in the pot for one more handful of rice. But his dad went “insane” and grabbed Lionel’s hand, holding it down in the hot burning coals from the fire! It “melted all his fingers together!” Jesse Ostrander found a doctor in the Dominican Republic to do hand surgery on Lionel! It was a success!!

He is now 17 years old and attending 8th grade. He wants to become a mechanic! He loves soccer and basketball! Lionel is thankful to the Lord, to his doctor, to Jesse, and to everyone! He gives God all the glory.

The Jesus Healing Center

Our Jesus Healing Center is a refuge for the sick, for those mothers who have sick children and no money for doctors, medicines, or lab tests. Some have traveled miles on foot, some on motorcycle, and some even on a donkey! The “word on the street” travels between one sick person and another.

After they are checked in, they sit in a beautiful open area and have prayer and devotions. Then, they can see and hear a message from God from Joyce Meyer in their own language. Their name is called, and they get their stats taken by a nurse. They then sit and wait for their name to be called to see the doctor. (We have good doctors!) They may need lab tests, and we have a lab right here! They don’t need to find a pharmacy because we have one right here, too! They do not pay for anything! Soon, they leave with hope and faith in their heart!

We are so thankful for a wonderful ministry that has made this possible… Joyce Meyer Ministries/Hand of Hope! For all of you who love and support her, she is the “real thing!” She has helped us during so many hard and difficult times!! We thank God for this wonderful ministry who has helped so many around the world!

“The Safest Place to Invest”

Have you ever wondered where the safest place is to invest your money, your time, and your love?

“God’s Seven Supernatural Blessings” – Psalm 41:1-3

Blessed is he that considereth the poor:

  1. The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble
  2. The Lord will preserve him
  3. And keep him alive
  4. And he shall be blessed upon the earth
  5. And thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies
  6. The Lord will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing
  7. Thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness

May God bless you for helping and feeding the poor.

Detailed Explanation of the Current Situation

We have been getting asked many questions about the current situation here in Fond Parisien. One of the main questions asked is, “If the gangs are so dangerous and the situation so chaotic, how is Love A Child continuing to operate?

We are open. We are providing meals to thousands. The Clinic, Birthing Center, Malnutrition Center, schools, churches, Agricultural Training Center, and every other aspect of Love A Child remains functioning. We are continuing the work of the ministry. But how? How is Love A Child able to do all this when at the same time the nearby gangs are raping, burning, pillaging, stealing, shooting, and murdering?

Love A Child is located in the eastern part of Haiti, very close to the Dominican border. The gangs control the territory to the west. They have taken over large parts of Port au Prince, all of Croix-des-Bouquets, and now the nearest town to the west of us, Ganthier. They also control the main road. The only way to get from Port au Prince to Love A Child is to pass through this 22-mile gauntlet of violent gangs who steal, kidnap, rape, and murder. It is a lawless zone. They do what they want, whenever they want without consequence.

But some people risk the drive. Their livelihoods depend on it. The gangs stop every single vehicle at multiple checkpoints along the route 24 hours a day. The only way for a vehicle to pass is to pay the huge fees assessed by the gangs. If the driver and passengers are lucky, they will pay and gain passage. If not, they could lose whatever cargo they are carrying; they could lose the vehicle, or worse, be killed. These thugs have become very efficient at making huge amounts of cash. It is one of the ways they fund their insatiable appetite for control, death, and destruction. They repay the local population in the currency of constant fear. They are truly terrorists.

The local population in the Fond Parisien area has adapted. There are far fewer trucks willing to attempt to pass to the west. This means fewer opportunities for the gangs to take advantage of them. But the gangs are insatiable and need more money! So they are advancing systematically toward the east, toward Love A Child. They have been raiding the poor lakeside villages between Ganthier and Love A Child, raping, and murdering people as they go.

When the gangs took Ganthier a few weeks ago, they came from the west, from the direction of Port Au Prince. About 30,000 people ran for their lives. They ran the only direction they could, toward us. They had to run east. There was no choice. The gangs were behind them indiscriminately shooting everyone. An enormous lake boxed them in on the north, and a massive mountain range on the south. So they ran east. With no possessions, no food, no help, they ran. The sick, the young, the old, and the ones that could not run are now dead. The stench of death still fills the air to our west.

The gangs keep trying to advance. But this area has shown resolve. They are defending their zone. The people are fighting. They are holding their ground. They must. Love A Child must. The only place to run now is to the Dominican Republic to the east. But the border is shut tight. A massive border wall with razor wire and armed military ensures that no Haitians will pass. So we are pinched in. We have to hold the line. We must defend.

There are local militia known as the Brigade, a local police force, border police, and some Haitian military, that fight day and night. I cannot give you operational details for security reasons. But they are unified. The area of Fond Parisien is unified.

But these forces are cut off from Port Au Prince. The gangs control the supply lines from the west. The police outpost on the defensive line receives no aid and no backup. The Brigade valiantly fights without resources. They are the locals. A loss here means everything. Those resisting the gangs are not getting any help from the Haitian government. The Port au Prince power brokers have convinced the decision makers to commit battle resources to other areas. So we do what we must. We are all they have. Love A Child helps feed them, fuel their vehicles, provides communication, and assists in any way we can. This is our home too.

Love A Child is still functioning because we must. Thousands depend on it. Most of our ministry takes place at the compound here in Fond Parisien, but we also have churches, schools, and feeding programs way up in the mountains directly to the south and east of us. We have not stopped. We are continuing to feed thousands, moms are birthing babies in our Birthing Center, the Clinic is binding up wounds and ministering to the sick, the ATC is cranking out the produce and teaching the locals how to do the same, malnourished babies on the brink of death are being nursed to health. Life here goes on. The need here did not disappear because the gangs showed up. So we keep moving. It is all by faith.

Even with the threat of mayhem and death at our western doorstep, we continue to do what God has called us to do. Love A Child is a source of hope, a city on a hill. But the fact is we do not have the resources to feed 30,000 displaced people. The defense efforts require large amounts of diesel. We do not have the funds to continue to fill their tanks. The indescribable need here has always been great, the situation is desperate. But now things are at a fever pitch. We are in the thick of it. We are committed. The Bible tells us, “…Having done all to stand, stand therefore.” Know this, Love A Child will stand. God gave us this ground. Hell cannot have it.

The reality is we need your help! We need your support! There is no one underwriting these new mammoth expenses. We operate by faith. Please continue to pray. Please continue to give. We serve a big God. He is our Protector. He is our Provider. Thank you for standing with us! Without you, this would not be possible.

Word from the Mission Field

Wisdom… It is a “powerful tool!” It will keep you out of trouble! And when you feel angry at someone and you want to “give them a piece of your mind,” wisdom will tell you that a “soft answer turns away wrath.” Wisdom is so powerful… the Bible says, “Wisdom is better than weapons of war!” Ecclesiastes 9:18

Each morning, Bobby and I pray for wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. When you live in Haiti, and the gangs are only about 11 miles from your compound, “asking for help from our Embassy” does nothing! Wisdom from God leads us and tells us what to do! If you could only pray “for one thing,” from God, ask for wisdom!! It is worth more than gold!

Sarah has Talent!

When I first saw Sarah and her brother, Joseph, I knew they were both fighting a battle with malnutrition… very serious Kwashiorkor Malnutrition. Kwashiorkor Malnutrition can kill children. When a child has Kwashiorkor Malnutrition they have dry hair that falls out, a swollen stomach, loss of muscle tissue, and swollen hands and feet. It is very serious. It means they have been eating, but not the right foods for toddlers. It took a long time for their swollen faces and bellies, hands, and feet to be normal.

I did have some issues with Sarah when she was a teen. She is “large-boned,” and always tried to wear her smaller sister’s clothes! When you have 85 kids to raise in Haiti, it takes a lot of wisdom and prayer, and a firm hand! Ha! But, after she finished high school she found her “gift” doing hairstyles, braids, and doing fancy nails!! She went to college in Haiti and will graduate next month! Whew!!

We pray that the Lord will provide everything she needs to start “Sarah’s Hair and Nails Boutique” here in Fond Parisien!! Sarah loves the Lord and knows that “He only can lift up the beggar.” I Samuel 2:8-10

Look at what God can do!!! We love Sarah and we are so proud of her.

Food Distribution in Fond Parisien

A special day in Fond Parisien yesterday!

Another “500 families from Ganthier,” were given an abundance of food yesterday, enough to last for two weeks in Fond Parisien. 2,000 families had to flee the town of “Ganthier,” leaving all behind. We have been feeding the families the best we can with your help. They received rice, beans, noodles, spaghetti, cornmeal, fish, and spices. They had to have help to carry all their food! They all were hungry and in desperate need of food for their family. It was a joyful day!!

The gangs still are in Ganthier. No one else is there. It’s time that the 400 Mawozo gang departs Ganthier and lets the families have their houses and life back!! School starts in October.

Thank you to everyone who gave, prayed, and took part in our food distribution. Thank you to our Haitian sons who distributed food and all our orphan children who worked very hard packing all the food in bags. Love is something you do!

“And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.” Joel 2:25-26

God will restore! Be ready for a miracle!
