Pilgrim’s Progress

Fourteen energetic boys from the orphanage and I went on a pilgrimage to the large lake not far from the Love A Child compound. We have made this trek now for three days in a row. The long hike down the narrow path that leads to the water meanders through enormous palm trees and dense vegetation, it’s a swamp-like area with nothing but mud and a large field where local farmers bring their animals to feed. The round-trip journey usually takes about two hours.

But today these guys were cruising. I had trouble keeping up with them. Maintaining a vigorous pace and even running at times, we clung to the winding trail and made the trip in half the time. Today we had a purpose, a reason to hustle. We had to get back to the orphanage before mealtime. This crew of growing explorers loves to eat.

With muddy shoes, wet socks, and sweat-drenched shirts, we made it back to the orphanage with joy in our hearts and smiles on our faces. We kept our eyes on the mark of reaching the lake. We never ventured off the narrow path. We finished the trek and successfully made it home in time.

Like these purposed pilgrims, we too should press on toward the mark. “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14
