Haiti is always joyous when they get good rains, not hard, flooding rains from hurricanes. This past week they had good rain in our area from last Saturday through most of Tuesday. The rain washes away the choking dust that is always there, fills empty household chatodos (large water tanks), and importantly provides nutrient-rich irrigation for the thirsty ground and plants. Good rain lifts everyone’s spirits, and there is general joy throughout the communities.
Our ATC staff took advantage of the beneficial rain to transplant beets into their prepared gardens and some even into tire gardens. In about 4 weeks, there will be many tender new beets to harvest. The rain also perked up the spinach, making it good for harvesting. The team took many large bundles of fresh spinach to the kitchens around Love A Child. Everyone loves their “epinard” (spinach), which is actually a variety of Amaranth that has great nutritional properties.
All in all, it was a good week in Fond Parisien with plenty of work getting done and everyone being in a good mood because of the fresh rains. Your continued support of our Development for Sustainability programs helps many families to have a better life with their new skills, good gardens, and better nutrition. God bless you for caring and sharing to support these families.
