Reliving the 2010 Earthquake in Haiti

Ten years ago today, a 7.1 earthquake hit the country of Haiti, crushing many men, women, and children, under tons of concrete buildings, walls, and even roads. That earthquake killed over 300,000 people and left tens of thousands of amputees. Sherry was in the mud-hut village of Old Letant by the lake. Every single mud hut “bent over and touched the ground.” Then, the noise of a freight train rumbled and then, shook the village like a dog, shaking something in a frenzy! Sherry and Carole, (who was working with us then), fell on their faces, thinking that any minute, the lake would swallow them.

I was in the orphanage, on the top floor. All the children ran out, and I was trying to go down the cement steps, but they shook so badly, that I was knocked on the floor! I thought the whole building would collapse… but, God gave us a miracle! No one was hurt!

The next day, the first responders came in from the Dominican Republic! There were lines and lines of cars, trucks, and emergency vehicles! We wish to thank the Dominican Republic again, for their great care of the Haitian people at that time!

Then, a helicopter landed on our Love A Child land. Out stepped generals from the D.R. in their uniforms. They wanted us to share our Love A Child property with any victims they would be helping with, and doctors, nurses, and surgeons. We agreed!

Soon after, President Obama sent a helicopter with representation from Harvard, among them, Dr. Hillary. She would be the one to set up and oversee the “largest field hospital in tents, in Haiti,” on our land, and what a great job she did! We had hundreds of doctors and surgeons coming through in that six month period from Harvard and other universities. People came from “everywhere” to help. Many doctors, when they came in, brought in saws to amputate limbs. Under all the stress of having all these people on our property, we got a call from David Meyer, Hand of Hope, representing Joyce Meyer. David said, “What do you need? You got it!” Through the help of Joyce Meyer Ministries – Hand of Hope we had just finished the Jesus Healing Center Clinic just in time!

Other wonderful ministries came to the rescue. Jentezen Franklin, Kingdom Connection, Pastor Randy Landis and Life Church, and so many other organizations. We had “all people” from every walk of life, and from “every church,” and many, who were Jewish, and other faiths… all working together. It was amazing!

The Spirit of God swept through our camp of injured and amputees, the presence of the Lord was so strong, that healing came faster in our camp than others. Dr. Hillary from Harvard said, “Whatever you are doing for the people, keep on doing it! They are healing so much faster!” But it wasn’t us. The amputees themselves began their prayer and praise and singing every night. The “wind of the Holy Spirit” swept through each night, healing the sick.

Soon after, we had to move the remaining people to our “other part of the land,” which soon became, “Miracle Village/Kingdom Connection” housing for the earthquake victims. Hand of Hope/Joyce Meyer, Jentezen Franklin, and many more helped sponsor houses for the earthquake victims. After this, we built Miracle Market, (the largest in Haiti) through the help of Jentezen Franklin and his “Kingdom Connection partners,” so that these “earthquake victims” could get their lives back, through jobs.

Thank you Feed My Starving Children for all the meals… we fed the sick and injured 3 meals per day.

Special thanks to the Hotes Foundation for helping with housing. A project which should have taken to build several hundred homes for 5 years, only took one year!! They had the money and muscle to make it happen. Thank you for also helping with the field hospital.

Thank you, Joel and Yvonne Trimble, for helping with the satellite communication.

But the greatest thing that came from the “earthquake,” was that more people than ever before turned to Jesus Christ as Lord! New churches were established from the earthquake, and much more. “What the devil meant for harm, God turned it into good.”

Thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for helping during the earthquake. You have left a legacy. We love you.

Bobby and Sherry Burnette

The Haitian people are precious survivors! We love them…
