Richard… Against All Odds

He shouldn’t have graduated from High School. He shouldn’t have learned how to play the drums, or the base, or the keyboard! And he shouldn’t have gone to college, but he did! Richard has Cerebral Palsy and is crippled in his legs. We met him eleven years ago when the orphanage he was staying in collapsed.

We let the leaders bring their children here to Love A Child. But, there was something about Richard that made us ask those in charge if we could keep him? Yes, they said. Richard automatically adapted to our children and they adapted to him! One of our partners, Harry, and his wife bought Richard a “three-wheeler tri-cycle.” This way, he could ride to our school, instead of “dragging his feet.” We taught Richard never to feel sorry for himself because God was with him!

He is now in college near us and is studying to be an accountant. He is also studying economics. We had to find one near us, because he could not get into a “tap tap” here in Haiti, where people are pushing and shoving. But, this college, Providence, is not far. Our driver takes him and his “tri-cycle” bike in the truck. He stays at the college during the week and on the weekends, he teaches music to our kids. On Sunday, he plays for the church service!

He is a special kid, sweet all the time, always smiling, and forever grateful!! We love Richard so much, and when he is gone, our hearts are empty. We love Richard!!
