School Shoes for Jonas

This was a great day for Jonas! Instead of working in a garden in the heat of the day with no food, from sunup to sundown, this sweet lovable little boy will be putting on his school uniform, shoes, backpack, and going to school for the first time in his life! Jonas was a restavek slave child. His parents died leaving no relatives to care for him, so a lady who owned a big field took him in as her slave. He was working in the heat of the day in the gardens, alongside adults, since his parents died.

When we brought him here to our orphanage, he did not even know how to hold a pencil in his hand. He tried to hold it with both hands as one would hold the heavy Haitian garden tool called a “wou!” Now, thanks to generous sponsors, he is eating three meals a day, sleeping in a bed, taking two showers a day, and going to school! He is happy, lovable, and adorable!! He never had a “hug” before in his life! Imagine that! We love you, friends, and partners because you love these children as much as we do!
