Seed Saving

“Honour the Lord with thy […] first fruits…” (Proverbs 3:9)

When we teach Haitian students new sustainable gardening methods (“Farming God’s Way”) for them to have a better life with long-term food security and better nutrition, one of the most important principals we teach is saving seed from the “first fruits” of your harvest to ensure you have good seeds for planting your next crop. The Bible shows us in many verses that the purpose of the “first fruit” giving is to ensure sustainability of your blessing. This is true for our gardens just as it is for our lives. We are fortunate to get our valuable garden seeds from Hope Seeds International. They stress the importance of seed saving to ensure future harvests, season after season, year after year.

Here are pictures of Wilner and the Agricultural Training Center (ATC) staff saving pepper seeds from the “first fruit” of their recent pepper harvest. We use only open-pollinated seeds from Hope Seeds International, and this ensures that the saved seeds will be robust, viable, and true to what was harvested. When you support our “sustainability” programs, you are supporting helping Haitians to help themselves, for generations to come. Thank you for planting your seed with this program.
