Apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 4:28 about sharing a harvest: “… let him work with his hands that he may have something to share with anyone in need.”
That is what our Sustainable gardening program at the ATC (Agricultural Training Center) teaches. See this big, beautiful harvest from the Love A Child gardens that Wilner and the ATC staff recently had.
Every week, they are treated like heroes when they share their bountiful harvests of fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables among the kitchens in Love A Child village. We in America are just now wrapping up our early spring gardens and about to get our summer gardens underway, but in Haiti, they can have 4-5 harvest cycles in a good year.
Wilner is careful to teach about rotating crops from one harvest to another so as not to deplete the soils, and he also teaches about intercropping and companion planting to maximize the yields from their garden spaces and to maintain the best soil conditions for year-round growing.
For example, they will plant corn and beans together because the beans provide nitrogen to the soil while the corn needs a lot of nitrogen for a good yield. They will also plant low-growing, leafy plants like sweet potatoes in the same space as other plants that benefit from the cooler soil temperatures and moisture-preserving effects of the shade from the potato vines. Look at the wide variety of foods from this big harvest. I am envious of the great results Wilner’s gardens have by following the principles of “farming God’s way.”
These gardeners are now able to help provide and share “food for life.”
Thank you to those of you who support Love A Child’s Sustainability outreaches.
