Stranger Things Happen in Haiti

You may never believe the story I am about to tell you…but it is real. This is Davidson, and he is in the 11th grade here at our Love A Child school. He and his brother, David, are twins. They came from the mountains of Covant, which is in the highest mountain area that we work in. Their father died before the twins were born, and their mother died right after. Their grandmother tried to keep them alive by giving them “saltwater.” They have been with us since they were given to us by their grandmother, Madamn Noel.

(We had named “Davidson” Jonathan, but the National Archives of Haiti, that makes the birth certificates would not allow us to call him “Jonathan,” because he had a twin; therefore, he had to have a name “similar” to his twin, thus, “Davidson.”)

Davidson has never given us any trouble, although he has been “lazy” and hates to get up early at 4:30 am when all the kids do it. I have had to take away many cell phones and iPhones from the older kids (some of them received them as gifts for Christmas last year); I decided that they needed to put their heads “in their schoolwork,” so I took away the phones, for a while.

Davidson decided to “borrow” a cell phone, without us knowing it. He began to look up “satanic things.” Since Haiti has a large population who practice Voodoo, many people believe in Satanic things, and satanic things are just as real as the spirit of God.

Davidson started to see all kinds of satanic things on the phone and especially the “symbol” of Satan on his cell phone. This “symbol” actually took control of his mind to the point that he began to draw this satanic symbol on everything. He wrote so many symbols that when he went to school for a test, he drew those symbols repeatedly on his test paper. Wow. He came home, and no one mentioned anything to us, neither the teacher nor the workers here at our Children’s Home.

(But that is so normal for Haitians…they never tell their boss or employer anything). That night, when everyone went to bed, the “satanic spirit” came upon him. All the kids came knocking on our door, “Mommie, Poppie, come and see Davidson.” When we went downstairs, he was under the sheet of his bed…and he kept “fighting” under his sheet but holding it so we could not move it. He was kicking and fighting and making weird noises.

We kept praying and talking to him, yelling at him but could not get him out of the sheet. Then, Bobby just ripped the sheet off so we could pray with him, and “he jumped up and ran out the window,” and across the yard, headed towards the gate. We called some of our workers and some others, who stopped Davidson. Davidson then began to tell us all of what happened…

We had to pray and separate him from the other children for two weeks and set him in the same room as Franceau, who is studying to be a Pastor. Franceau has been praying with him, and after two weeks, I noticed a change in him, so I told him I wanted him to start with the book of Genesis and read one chapter of the Bible each day, and I would give him a “test.”

I forgot that I had told him to do this, and yesterday when I passed by the cafeteria, there he was, smiling with his Bible open, reading, praying, and “taking notes!” We believe that the evil spirit has departed for good.

Haiti is a country where strange things happen, and we must be in prayer all the time.

God bless you, and thank you for your prayers! Raising children in an orphanage in Haiti is NOT an easy job, but we are here, where God sent us!
