The children of Haiti are paying the price. There has always been hunger in Haiti, but now, it is much, much worse. The ships that bring in food, have been blocked at the port by the gangs who control the port and most of Haiti. Nothing is coming in or going out! Malnutrition is widespread. We can only handle “so many babies and toddlers” in our Malnutrition Clinic.
Due to the gangs, hunger, and starvation, “Haiti has gotten worse.” Boats cannot come into the port to bring corn, cooking oil, rice, etc.
The food prices have gone “sky high.” When the poor Haitian mothers buy food, they cannot afford a “small sack of rice.” They are buying in the measurement of a “small can of corn.” This is called a “ti marmit.” And, it is a miracle, “if” they eat “every other day.” What we have heard from mothers and children, is that they are saying the children eat “usually every three days,” and only one meal that day. When we say “one meal,” the Haitians can mean “one handful.”
Bobby and I are returning to Haiti soon, but for security reasons, we cannot tell you the day. Just keep us in your prayers and we are going to do something about the food problem! With your help, we can make a difference. The Haitians say, “Anpil patat fe chay,” It means, “a lot of potatoes make up the load.” When you and I put our “potatoes together,” no matter how many you have or how few, it makes up a “load!”
Thank you for already going “the extra mile,” but if your heart is touched, keep on helping, keep on giving, and keep on walking. “Never quit!” We’re “almost home!” We are in our darkest hour of Haiti, but the sun is about to shine.
Bobby and Sherry
