The Story of “Pa Bezouin”

I can remember the day like it was yesterday. Mark Crea, and his group from Feed My Starving Children were with us distributing food. We had gone to “Old Letant” for another food distribution and there he was again… “that dirty, naked little boy, on his knees” sitting in the hot sun. His parents did not want him, and so they didn’t feed him much. They thought he would never walk or talk, and they thought Voodoo was the cause.

Kids went by and slapped him on the head, and said, “pa bezouin,” which means, “I don’t need you.” There was no telling how long he would be sitting there in the hot sun without any water or food. He could not walk. He was at the mercy of his parents, a father deeply involved in Voodoo. Suddenly, the Lord spoke to my heart and said, “if you walk away and leave him, he will die.”

I picked him up and his arms draped around my neck. I told his mother, “I am going take him and get him some help. If he stays here, he will die and it will be your fault.” We took that naked, hungry little boy back to our orphanage. His name was Wisnelson, but we just called him Nelson.

Soon, with food and love, Nelson started walking, talking, running, and playing. He is now very good in sports and makes good grades in school. He is “afraid of nothing!”

This is what can happen, “when we don’t pass by, on the other side.” God bless all our wonderful partners who have saved Nelson’s life and many more!
