There’s No Place Like Home!

Our baby, Dumolia (Dimelia), is “home for the holidays!” It’s hard for a young girl to be in college in another country, when she misses home in Haiti! Dumolia is studying medicine and wants to be a nurse, and perhaps a doctor. She could not go to college in Haiti because she speaks very little French. She was badly burned as a child when a pot of boiling water tumbled over on her. We sent her to Shriners Children’s Hospital in Boston and for years she was back and forth getting skin grafts. She learned English there and took her last high school year of school at an English-speaking Christian school here in Haiti.

After she finished, we decided it would be best to send to her to an English-speaking college. We chose Jamaica because it is safe, and we have friends there. She is near some wonderful churches. She could not fly from Jamaica directly to Haiti so she had to “fly through” Providencia Island. But when she landed in the Bahama Islands they were not going to let her board. They said they needed “verification,” because her ticket was bought with a Love A Child credit card. She has a debit card for personal items in Jamaica but it was not enough for the ticket. She was about in tears when the lady felt so sorry for her and said, “Oh, just get on the plane!”

Even though Haiti is in the midst of chaos, with gangs everywhere and we have “very little internet… there’s no place like home!” We’re so proud of her! Thank you, partners, for all your love and prayers, Sherry
