They Called Him, “Pa Bezouin”

They Called Him, “Pa Bezouin”

“Pa Bezouin” means “I don’t need you” or “I don’t want you…”

Nelson’s father and mother live in the village of “Old Letant” by the dirty lake. He was about two, or maybe three, the first time I saw him. His mother came out of their hut holding this baby “by one arm!” She dumped him on the filthy ground right beside a big hog. He had to sit on his knees because he could not walk. He was naked, thirsty, hungry, and alone… And I was “angry!” How could a mother dump her crippled child on the ground in the heat of sun with no food or water, or even a clean blanket to sit on!

After watching him for a few minutes, I couldn’t take it any longer! I picked him up and he immediately wrapped his arms around me. I went to his parents and told them that I could take him off their hands! They said, “Take him. Take him!” In just a short time, he was standing! Soon, he was walking, talking, and going to school! Nelson is such a blessing! Sherry
